Beyond the Classroom: 28 KNUST Mechanical Engineering Students Gain Hands-On Industry Exposure at MPTI

Engineering is not only about understanding how things work. It is about learning how to apply that knowledge to solve real-world problems.

On 26 June 2026, MAC Partners Training Institute (MPTI) had the privilege of welcoming 28 Mechanical Engineering students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Obuasi Campus for an educational visit focused on the Institute’s Mechanical Department.

The visit provided an opportunity for students to step beyond the classroom and experience a practical training environment where engineering knowledge is connected to real-world applications.

From Theory to Practical Experience

University education provides aspiring engineers with essential theoretical foundations.

However, understanding engineering concepts in a classroom is only one part of becoming a well-rounded professional.

Students also need opportunities to see how those concepts translate into practical environments.

At MPTI, the visiting students were introduced to training facilities, equipment, technologies, and practical approaches used to develop mechanical engineering skills.

The experience allowed them to connect what they have learned academically with the realities of technical work.

Exploring the Mechanical Department

The visit focused particularly on MPTI’s Mechanical Department, giving students an opportunity to explore the environment in which practical mechanical skills are developed.

Through guided tours, demonstrations, and discussions, the students gained insight into the tools, equipment, technologies, and processes that support hands-on mechanical training.

These experiences can help students develop a deeper appreciation of the relationship between engineering theory and technical practice.

Learning From Experienced Professionals

One of the most valuable aspects of industry exposure is the opportunity to engage directly with people who have practical experience.

During the visit, students interacted with experienced instructors and industry professionals, creating an environment for questions, discussions, and knowledge sharing.

Such interactions can provide perspectives that are difficult to gain from textbooks alone.

Students can learn about workplace expectations, practical challenges, professional responsibilities, technical problem-solving, and the importance of continuous learning in engineering.

Why Industry Exposure Matters

The transition from university to professional engineering requires more than academic knowledge.

Future engineers must be able to:

  • Apply theoretical concepts to practical situations
  • Understand technical equipment and systems
  • Solve real-world engineering problems
  • Work effectively in professional environments
  • Communicate technical ideas clearly
  • Develop confidence in practical decision-making
  • Continue learning as technology evolves

Industry visits provide students with an opportunity to begin developing this broader perspective while they are still in school.

Building the Engineers of Tomorrow

Ghana’s industrial development depends on a strong pipeline of technically capable professionals.

Mechanical engineers have an important role to play across sectors including mining, manufacturing, energy, construction, transportation, and industrial maintenance.

Preparing these professionals requires collaboration between academic institutions, technical training centres, and industry.

When students can move between the classroom and practical environments, they gain a more complete understanding of what it means to become an engineer.

Strengthening the MPTI–KNUST Connection

The visit also highlights the value of collaboration between MAC Partners Training Institute and KNUST Obuasi Campus.

Partnerships between educational and technical institutions can create opportunities for knowledge exchange, practical learning, professional engagement, and skills development.

For students, these connections can help make their education more relevant to the realities of industry.

For training institutions, they provide an opportunity to contribute to the development of the next generation of professionals.

Looking Toward the Future

We sincerely appreciate the initiative taken by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, KNUST Obuasi Campus, and thank the students and faculty for visiting MAC Partners Training Institute.

We are proud to contribute to the development of Ghana’s next generation of engineering professionals and look forward to creating more opportunities that promote innovation, technical excellence, industry exposure, and practical learning.

Because the journey to becoming an exceptional engineer does not happen entirely in a classroom.

It happens when knowledge meets experience. Theory meets practice. And students are given the opportunity to see what they can become.
