Performance Criteria
| Main Purpose (Role): |
| The Mechanical Technician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, repair and overhaul of plant mechanical equipment pumps, valves, compressors and hydraulic systems and for the execution of routine lubrication and preventive maintenance. The role involves inspecting, diagnosing, repairing and commissioning mechanical equipment in line with manufacturer specifications, maintenance standards and safety procedures, so that plant equipment runs reliably, safely and at design performance with minimum unplanned downtime. |
| Key Performance Area’s (Responsibilities): |
| Install, align, couple and commission centrifugal, positive-displacement and submersible pumps in accordance with drawings and manufacturer instructions, and record final alignment readings within tolerance.Strip, inspect and overhaul pumps, impellers, wear rings, shafts, sleeves, bearings, mechanical seals and gland packing and set clearances and seal faces to specification.Install, service and repair gate, globe, ball, butterfly, check, control and safety relief valves, including seat lapping, packing and seal renewal, correct gasket selection and flange bolt tightening sequence and torque.Carry out scheduled servicing and overhaul of reciprocating, screw and centrifugal compressors, together with receivers, dryers, traps, separators and compressed-air distribution systems.Install, maintain and troubleshoot hydraulic and pneumatic systems, power packs, pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, accumulators, hoses and fittings, working from circuit diagrams and safely depressurising systems before any intervention.Execute the plant lubrication schedule: oiling, greasing, oil top-up and oil changes at the correct intervals using the correct grade and quantity, and maintain lubrication points, breathers and system cleanliness to the required contamination standard.Carry out preventive maintenance inspections and condition monitoring, bearing temperature and noise, vibration, belt and chain tension, coupling condition, guard integrity, leak checks, recommend corrective action.Diagnose and repair mechanical faults on rotating and static equipment, replacing bearings, couplings, gearboxes, belts, chains, seals and gaskets, and using precision instruments to measure wear, clearance and fit.Attend breakdowns promptly, support shutdown maintenance and equipment overhauls, and participate in the standby and call-out rota.Work strictly to permit-to-work, isolation and lock-out/tag-out procedures, and handle, store and dispose of oils, greases and used filters in line with environmental requirements.Complete work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, equipment readings and shift handover documentation accurately and on time. Qualifications
| HND/Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent with a minimum of 2–3 years of relevant experience OR Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with a minimum of 3–5 years of relevant experience OR Technician Part III Certificate (Mechanical) with at least 5 years of practical experience in mining, mineral processing or heavy industrial maintenance. | Essential / Advantageous Essential |
