Performance Criteria

Main Purpose (Role):

The Mechanical Technician – Fridge Plant & Vent Fan Maintenance is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and overhaul of the mine refrigeration plant and the main and auxiliary ventilation fan installations. The role ensures the safe, reliable and efficient delivery of cooling and ventilation to the mine by maximising plant availability, minimising downtime and ensuring compliance with maintenance standards, statutory regulations and mine safety procedures.

Key Performance Area’s (Responsibilities):

Carry out scheduled servicing, maintenance and overhaul of refrigeration compressors, including screw and centrifugal machines, and their lubrication, capacity control and safety systems.Maintain condensers, evaporators, chillers, bulk air coolers, cooling towers, pumps and associated water circuits, including cleaning, descaling and leak rectification.Support the safe handling, charging, recovery and leak detection of refrigerants in accordance with manufacturer requirements and environmental procedures.Inspect, maintain and repair main and auxiliary ventilation fans, including bearings, shafts, couplings, impellers and blades, drive systems, dampers, guards and silencers.Carry out precision maintenance on rotating equipment, including shaft alignment, balancing support, clearance and torque setting, and vibration and bearing temperature monitoring.Execute preventive maintenance and lubrication schedules for refrigeration plant and ventilation fans, and monitor operating parameters such as pressures, temperatures, flows and motor current.Support planned maintenance shutdowns, equipment overhauls, and the installation and commissioning of new or repaired refrigeration and ventilation equipment.Attend breakdowns promptly, and complete work orders, maintenance records, equipment readings and shift handover documentation accurately and on time. Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree/HND in Mechanical Engineering, Refrigeration & Air-Conditioning Engineering or an equivalent engineering discipline with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, OR Technician Part III Certificate (Mechanical/Refrigeration) with a minimum of 5 years of practical experience in mining, heavy industrial or process plant operations. MINCOM certification, refrigeration and air-conditioning competency or refrigerant handling certification, permit-to-work system training, lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) training, working at heights training, confined space entry training, rigging and slinging competency and first aid certification are highly desirable. Technical Competencies   Advanced proficiency in the maintenance, troubleshooting and overhaul of mine refrigeration plant and ventilation fan installations, including refrigeration compressors, condensers, evaporators, chillers, bulk air coolers, cooling towers and water circuits, together with main and auxiliary fans, bearings, couplings, drive systems, dampers and impellers. Demonstrated competence in shaft alignment, vibration and condition monitoring, precision measurement, lubrication practice, mechanical fault diagnosis, preventive and breakdown maintenance, and safe maintenance practices within a mining environment.

Minimum of 3–5 years of practical experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting and overhaul of refrigeration plant and ventilation fan installations, or comparable rotating and process plant equipment. Experience with refrigeration compressors, chillers, cooling towers, bulk air coolers, main and auxiliary fans, shaft alignment, condition monitoring, preventive maintenance and shutdown maintenance within a mining or heavy industrial environment is required.
