1. JOB PURPOSE
To carry out servicing, diagnosis, repair and overhaul of the company’s vehicles and mobile plant to manufacturer standards, so that the fleet remains safe, legally compliant and available for operations. The Workshop Mechanic works largely unsupervised on assigned jobs, completes work right first time, records it accurately, and contributes to reducing unplanned downtime and repeat failures.
2. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Servicing and preventive maintenance
- Carry out scheduled services (A, B and major services) on light vehicles, trucks and mobile plant in line with manufacturer schedules and the company’s preventive maintenance plan.
- Perform oil, filter, fluid, belt and brake changes; check and adjust tyre pressures, wheel torque and fluid levels.
- Complete safety inspections and roadworthiness checks, and flag defects that take a unit out of service.
- Follow the workshop job card system: open, update and close job cards with parts used, labour hours and findings.
Diagnosis and repair
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and drivetrain faults using symptoms, test equipment and diagnostic scan tools.
- Repair or replace engines, gearboxes, clutches, differentials, suspension, steering and braking components.
- Strip, inspect, measure and reassemble assemblies to specification, including correct torque values, clearances, shimming and alignment.
- Service hydraulic systems — pumps, rams, valves, hoses — and diagnose leaks and pressure losses.
- Carry out basic auto-electrical work: batteries, starters, alternators, lighting, wiring repairs and sensor replacement.
- Road-test or function-test units after repair and confirm the fault is cleared before release.
Breakdowns and field support
- Attend breakdowns on site or on the road, assess the fault, and either repair in the field or arrange safe recovery.
- Participate in the standby and call-out rota, including nights and weekends as scheduled.
Records, parts and cost control
- Record all work performed, parts consumed and time taken in the fleet maintenance system or register.
- Raise accurate parts requisitions, return unused and reclaimable parts, and avoid over-ordering.
- Report warranty-related failures and recurring defects to the Supervisor with supporting evidence.
- Maintain fault history so repeat failures can be traced and root causes addressed.
Health, safety and environment
- Work in line with company HSE rules, safe systems of work, permits, lock-out/tag-out and vehicle jacking and support procedures.
- Wear and maintain the required PPE at all times and never work under an unsupported load.
- Handle, store and dispose of oils, coolants, batteries, solvents and waste in line with environmental procedures.
- Report all incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions immediately.
- Keep the work bay, tools and equipment clean, serviceable and correctly stored (5S housekeeping).
Teamwork and development
- Support and mentor apprentices and workshop assistants, demonstrating correct technique and safe practice.
- Share fault-finding knowledge with the team and contribute to toolbox talks and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Keep skills current on new models, systems and diagnostic equipment introduced to the fleet.
3. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Recognised trade qualification in motor vehicle / heavy duty equipment mechanics (e.g. NVTI Certificate, City & Guilds, trade test certification or equivalent).
- Minimum 3–5 years’ post-qualification experience in a vehicle or fleet workshop environment.
- Proven ability to diagnose and repair faults independently across engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension and hydraulics.
- Competent use of hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments (micrometers, vernier calipers, dial gauges, torque wrenches) and workshop lifting equipment.
- Ability to read and work from workshop manuals, service schedules, wiring diagrams and hydraulic schematics.
- Valid driving licence appropriate to the vehicles maintained.
- Sound understanding of workshop health and safety practice.
Desirable
- Experience with diagnostic scan tools and manufacturer diagnostic software.
- Auto-electrical, air brake, air conditioning or welding and fabrication competence.
- Experience with a computerised maintenance management system (CMMS) or fleet management software.
- Exposure to preventive maintenance planning and condition monitoring.
- Defensive driving or first aid certification.
4. SKILLS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
- Methodical fault-finding: works from symptom to root cause rather than replacing parts by guesswork.
- Quality-minded — completes work right first time and to specification.
- Reliable and punctual, with a strong safety mindset.
- Accurate record keeping and attention to detail.
- Communicates clearly with supervisors, drivers, operators and stores.
- Works well under pressure during breakdowns and peak workload without cutting corners.
- Honest and accountable in the handling of tools, parts and company property.
5. WORKING CONDITIONS
- Workshop and field-based, including outdoor work in varying weather.
- Exposure to noise, oils, fuels, dust and moving equipment; correct PPE is mandatory.
- Physically demanding: prolonged standing, bending, working at height on units, and lifting up to [insert] kg with correct technique or lifting aids.
- Shift work, overtime, standby and call-out as required by fleet demand.
6. PERFORMANCE MEASURES
- Percentage of scheduled services completed on time (PM compliance).
- Fleet availability and unplanned downtime attributable to assigned units.
- Repeat repair / comeback rate on completed jobs.
- Mean time to repair on assigned breakdowns.
- Accuracy and timeliness of job card and parts records.
- Zero lost-time injuries and full compliance with HSE procedures.
